Chapter 1

Steve couldn’t have had a worse week. His C.O. from the Navy called, and requested to meet with him regarding a mission. He had no idea what to expect from it, but he assumed that this meant deployment, and if there was ever a day where he expected that he didn’t want to be deployed, this was it. He hadn’t ever expected to find what he found in Hawaii when he returned after his father’s death. He hadn’t expected finding a short man with an even shorter fuse that would eventually grow into something Steve couldn’t even explain now. Nope, he expected to live a life in the Navy, moving from place to place, and never setting up a “home” anywhere. Which is why when deployment entered his mind, he couldn’t stop thinking about how he was not ready to leave his home. He didn’t want to leave Kono or Chin, but he especially didn’t want to leave Danny or Grace. The fact that they were in an abduction case where the young child from the Japanese Ambassador to the U.S. was being held for ransom, and it was up to Five-0 to get him home made this even harder to deal with. After more than 84 hours without sleep, Steve was at his wit’s end on how to keep everything together. He had just gained a family – something he hasn’t had for almost 20 years. He finally has people who need him here, and he has to leave. Maybe. He didn’t even know, but the thought of leaving is too much. He didn’t want to leave everyone that has grown to be his world.

And fuck his luck, the instant Danny looked at his face, he wouldn’t leave it alone. He didn’t want to talk about this when he’s nearing exhaustion. He knew that if this conversation were to happen, that there would be a huge risk that something would go wrong. At this point, that seemed to be the only path this could take.

“Steven, look at me. What’s wrong?”

Danny wouldn’t stop asking. Steve couldn’t tell him about any possible deployment.

“Deployment?! Steven, you are not going to just move when they say move, are you?! You can’t.”

Fuck, he just said that thought out loud, didn’t he…

“Danny, nothing is s-“

“What are you trying to say? Nothing is set in stone yet?! You know the Navy best, and if deployment is coming to your mind, it’s probably the thing to happen. Jesus, McGarrett, how long have you known about this?!”

And that’s the thing. This came up two days ago. During the case they couldn’t afford to mess up on. He had to explain this to Danny. Somehow.

“And about moving when someone says move, you’re one to talk. Aren’t you moving to Vegas soon when Stan takes Gra-“

Where the fuck did that come from, McGarrett?! Fuck, he couldn’t keep his mouth shut, not until it was too late, at least. Now, he knew what was happening. This was the point where he’d lost everything. Danny’s next words were jumbled together in his head. What was he thinking? Why did he react so badly to this? Why did he just say the one thing that would blow this whole thing up? What was he going to do now? He is running on no sleep for 84 hours, the bad result to the end of the case where the child was found, no, delivered, neck slit opened, to his parents’ villa on the island, and now he’d just said the worst possible thing to the person who meant the most to him.

“-my daughter into this! You hear me?! Jesus fuck, McGarrett, you are sleeping alone tonight, and in the morning, we will discuss the future of this relationship, because when I move and when you get deployed, I don’t even know if we will make it through this!”

Like that, the door to Steve’s house slammed shut, leaving Steve alone. The events of the last few minutes caught up to him along with the last few days. The vision of the child being delivered being Gracie hadn’t left his mind since he heard the call. He knew it was on Danny’s mind too. Everything from the last 84 hours was weighing heavily on everyone’s minds. They still had the paperwork of this part of the investigation to do, as well as the kidnappers to find, even though they were probably long gone out of the country by now. He took out his phone, noticing wet spots on the screen when he looked at it. He knew they were his tears; he wiped it clean and pulled up Danny’s name on his text window.

D, I’m sorry. I’m the biggest ass ever. Please, come home.

He hit send, knowing it wouldn’t do him any good. The tone Danny used wasn’t like his tone that said he was going to kill someone; it was more like the person he was talking to was dead to him. Steve knew he was going to have to find a way to make this right. He couldn’t lose his family for a second time.
