Chapter 2
Danny looked at his phone – 12 missed calls, starting from 11:32PM the previous night; going until 7:46AM that morning. The times were spread out as well; Steve hadn’t slept all night and was waiting for him to come home. Danny couldn’t wait any longer. He called a cab and ran out as fast as he could. He couldn’t look at Rachel for the rest of the morning. Seeing her just brought more guilt and his gut twisted more at the thought of what he had done. The cab arrived; Danny had him race to the bar from the last night as fast as it could go.
When he reclaimed his car, it was a savior. He quickly tried Steve’s number, but after a few rings, it went straight to voicemail. Danny decided to leave a text message:
Babe, I’m the worst piece of shit ever. Please call me.
When Steve didn’t respond after five minutes, he turned on the car, and raced off. While driving like a mad man across the town, he dialed Steve’s number again – still no response. This wasn’t any surprise to Danny; if he’d walked in on Steve and Catherine, or anyone for that matter, Danny would probably ignore Steve and end their relationship. What had ever possessed Danny to decide to cheat on Steve?
After calling Steve one last time and being forwarded to voicemail, he pleaded with the phone to let him talk to Steve.
“Babe, I get it. You…You saw that…Me…with Rachel…I’m so sorry. It was a mistake. Please call me. I need to hear your voice. Please, babe.”
He ended the call, and decided to take drastic measures to fix everything. He figured that the best person to listen to everything was Chin. He quickly dialed his number.
“Danny, what’s up brah? Boss said you were home sick! Shouldn’t you be resting?” The concern in his voice told Danny that Steve said nothing about what had happened. Was this a good thing? Knowing Steve, though, he’s probably in his office, distracting himself with anything he can. He’d probably asked not to be disturbed, since he usually secludes himself when something bad happens.
“Listen, Chin, please. You have to meet me at Kamekona’s right now. I have to confess – I did something unforgivable. Fuck. Please, I need to talk to someone about this.” Danny felt horrible enough. Maybe Chin could help him think of something that could repair bridges enough to get Steve to talk to him.
“Danny, listen, I’ll be there as soon as I can. Boss is really pissed about something. He didn’t say what, but he’s given all of us the glare he uses with suspects in the interrogation room. “ Chin sounded rushed, but Danny specifically heard him say ‘all of us’. Does that mean there was someone else there other than him, Chin, and Kono? “Look, Danny, I’m going to get some lunch. Steve has that look again. Catherine can’t even calm him down. When I get there, tell me everything. I’m assuming you know what has gotten him like this.”
Danny heard a click and put his phone away. He couldn’t keep this up. He needed to come clean. He vowed to fix this. He pulled into a parking spot at the beach, and just waited. Each minute felt like an hour long, but he kept waiting. The more he thought, the more he realized how much of his life revolved around having Steve with him. Grace was his little angel – his world – but Steve; Steve was something else completely. He was the person who kept him grounded. He made this island tolerable. Hell, he’d admit it now. Danny loved Hawaii because of Steve. He couldn’t imagine living in Hawaii without Steve.
Without Steve. Danny feared this would certainly be his future. At this thought, Danny’s tears emerged once more. Teamed with the immense guilt he felt about what he had done, he knew that this wasn’t going to be an easy fix. He just wanted to take the previous night back. Fuck whatever they fought over. This was far more important. Steve was far more important to him. Why had he let his pride get in the way? Danny could have spent all day thinking about all these questions, but as soon as Chin’s bike pulled up, he knew he had to come clean. When Chin’s eyes met his, Danny could tell – Chin knew.
