Chapter 5
The week seemed to never end. Steve hardly talked to Danny, and the less they talked, the more Danny realized how little Steve wanted to see him. Danny had been living with Kono until he could find a new apartment. He never expected to be back to apartment hunting, but here he was searching for anything cheap.
Steve had ignored him completely, unless it had to do with a case. Steve began taking Catherine and Chin along with him on their cases. The two of them, and even Kono, had been acting weirdly as well. They gave him strange looks, not exactly filled with anger or frustration like he expected, but more peculiar. They seemed to be confused at something as well. Danny couldn’t, for the life of him, figure out what the looks meant, but he didn’t mind. He wasn’t going to be in Five-0 for much longer. He had the paperwork all filled out for his transfer back to HPD. All it needed was Steve’s signature. For some reason, he couldn’t bring himself to deliver it to him. That would be final. He wouldn’t see Steve anymore. He wouldn’t deal with him on an everyday basis. He wasn’t going to solve cases with him, or even deal with the awkward looks he was getting from his other teammates.
Grace reacted badly when he told her what had happened. She began to ask questions like “Why doesn’t Uncle Steve want to see us anymore?” and “Why did you look at someone else when you’re with Uncle Steve?” The worst part of this was that Danny didn’t have any answers for that question. He didn’t know what had made him sleep with Rachel after that fight. He didn’t know what possessed him to ruin things with the perfect boyfriend, and fiancée-to-be, but when he thought about it, he had no answers for himself.
Danny walked slowly into work on Monday morning after his Grace Weekend. He held the paperwork in his sweaty hand. He didn’t know what he was going to say to Steve, but he needed to get out of there so Steve could rebuild himself after this rough time. He was just going to keep reminding Steve of the pain, and he wouldn’t let himself do this. He met Steve’s glance as he walked through the door, then he noticed Steve’s eyes connect with the papers Danny held.
“Here. I’m going back to HPD. I…cannot stay here. I’m sorry.”
Steve’s look was one Danny would remember forever. He looked almost shocked that Danny was doing this. What did he expect from him? Danny needed to get away for his sake. This was the only way to fix Steve.
“Danny, you know I cannot accept this. You’re one of the best, and this team needs you.”
He wouldn’t accept this? What was he thinking?! This was his time to move on. Danny scoured his mind, trying to think of some reason as to why Steve said this, but all that came to his mind were reasons why he should leave.
“Steve, listen. I cannot deal with all of the stuff that has happened lately. It’s my fault, and I want to give you one final thing. My departure from here will end this tension with the team. Just sign the papers. I’m going to pack up the stuff in my office.”
With that said, Danny turned around and quickly walked out of the office. He couldn’t wait for Steve’s response. He needed out of this. He wouldn’t move on, but maybe Steve could, after he was gone. Walking into what used to be his own office, he began to tear up once more. Why was it so hard to leave this alone? He needed to pack everything up. He got one of the boxes he wasn’t using out and began to put everything away. His awards, his baseball decorations, his books – everything was going down. The last thing he put in there was the hardest; there was a picture on his desk of him, Steve, and Grace taken by a professional photographer on Steve’s beach. The light hit Steve’s eyes just right and the blue just seemed to shine. Steve had the most beautiful smile, and the longer Danny looked at this picture, the more he began to cry at what he had and then lost. He no longer had any of this. Grace wouldn’t talk to him unless he answered those questions, except if she was begging to see her Uncle Steve. Danny could never say no to her, but would Steve say yes? That was the only problem with him telling her anything.
He finished packing up just as Kono walked into the room.
“What the hell are you doing? You can’t transfer back!”
She seemed completely sad, confused, and angry. Why was she trying to stop him from transferring back? Why was everyone trying to stop him? This was going to make things easier. Didn’t anyone see that?
“Why shouldn’t I transfer back? Everything has gotten awkward here. Nobody talks anymore. The laughter is gone. We don’t hang out outside of work anymore. Everything that happened? All me. You know that. Steve knows that. Cath knows that. Chin knows that! I can’t stay here and make the team suffer like this, so I’m going back to HPD.”
Danny couldn’t bring himself to say anymore. He had messed up everything with this team. He walked right by the woman in front of him and out the door. He passed Cath on the way out who gave him a grim look, not the one he expected from her after their chat last week. Chin was pulling up on his bike as Danny put the box in his trunk. He had the same expression Cath had, but he didn’t know what was up with any of them. Why wouldn’t they just make things simple? Why did it seem like they knew something he didn’t? What the hell was even going on with everyone? Danny got in his car and drove off, no longer able to take the looks that each of his former teammates had given him. They all wanted him to stay, even if he had ruined everything. What was the big idea? He couldn’t stay, could he? He decided that this wasn’t the time to second-guess himself, and kept driving. He reached Kono’s apartment, and as he opened the door, he felt a small prick on the back of his neck, then everything around him began to spin and go black…
When Danny came to, he couldn’t tell if his eyes were opened. There was nothing but darkness around him. He tried to open his eyes, but found he had already done so. His arms and legs were chained, and he could hardly move. Danny was in constant pain; his arms and legs both were throbbing. He suspected that something might be broken, and that he was beaten while he was out cold. He didn’t even know how long he was out, and he couldn’t see any light anywhere. Suddenly, he felt strong and forceful hands lift his head up and put something that smelled good near his lips. Danny realized how hungry he was and quickly devoured the food given to him. Afterwards, Danny succumbed to the pain and the darkness seemed to drag him into a long sleep; he began to consider this the punishment he deserved for the pain he inflicted on his former team.
The next time Danny woke, he woke to the same forceful arms feeding him once more. He didn’t know who they were, but they obviously wanted him alive. He prayed he could be saved, but also realized how doubtful it was that he would be. There was probably a small police squad looking for him. If he was lucky, Five-0 would be on the hunt as well, and they probably would figure out where he was. However, what would he go back to? He didn’t have Steve, and he wouldn’t have his teammates anymore. He’d probably not have a partner that would give him two seconds on HPD’s clock. It wasn’t long before he decided to go back to sleep and wonder if he’d wake back up.
The next time he woke up, the shackles on his hands and legs were gone. He saw a light around him. The smell of the place was clean. He felt wires around him, and there was a low beeping tone. He quickly realized he was in a hospital, but he couldn’t remember how he had gotten there. Who had saved him? He looked around, and there was nobody in the room with him. He realized how alone he was, and laid there in silence. Someone had saved him and didn’t have the time to stick around. He closed his eyes and let the silence take him into another deep slumber.
When he woke up once more, he felt a warmth he hadn’t felt in a long while. There was someone there. He looked down and saw Steve resting his head on the bed. He was sleeping, but Danny didn’t believe that he was there. His head was throbbing, and even if he was awake, he was probably hallucinating. He closed his eyes and fell back into a dreamless sleep, letting himself believe the more preferable option that seeing Steve was only a dream.
Finally, he was able to be discharged from the hospital. After getting one last injection of pain medication for the injuries he sustained, which included bruised bones in each of his legs, a re-torn ACL, a bruised bone in one of his arms, and a break in the other arm, he was wheeled to the lobby in a wheelchair, fully intending to call a cab, when he saw Chin and Kono at the door. They ran towards him and each gave him a big hug.
“We got ‘im, brah.”
Kono told him about the case, how someone had kidnapped him, beaten him, and intended to execute him live in front of the Five-0 Task Force, HPD, and the Governor of Hawaii, to signify the beginning of a new gang more powerful than any other force in the state, especially the Five-0 Task Force. They also let him know that he was getting a ride with them, since Danny obviously couldn’t drive, as he was incapacitated and had an injection of pain medication right before being discharged, and he didn’t have his car with him. He stayed quiet for most of the drive, until they passed the turn to Kono’s apartment.
“Guys, we missed our turn. What are you doing?”
Danny got even more irritated when they stayed silent, probably using their strange cousin-telepathy that they always seem to do to talk to each other. They looked back and grinned at Danny.
“Wait, what are you two planning? Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Sorry Danny, we’re sworn to secrecy.”
Kono responded almost immediately, and Danny knew something was definitely up. Why else would they be kidnapping him straight from the hospital? He knew that he was repeatedly drugged so he would remain asleep for much of the time, and he was definitely beaten badly. He would probably need help moving around, and where else to get it other than Kono’s apartment? They were taking him somewhere, but he was feeling drowsy from the pain medicine he got before being discharged, so he closed his eyes, knowing he wouldn’t get anything out of neither Chin nor Kono for the rest of the ride.
Danny was awake, but not fully comprehending anything around him. Everything seemed to spin as Chin and Kono helped him up some stairs – he didn’t even know where he was, but soon, he was in a bed that was so warm, comfortable, and familiar, but his brain couldn’t even make any connection before he passed out. He knew deep down that no matter where this place was, he felt safer than he had felt in days or weeks; he doesn’t even know how long it has been before he has felt this safe.
